Day #16 Journal Tues, July 21, 2015

My sister Samara, Magan, Alisha, and me are in a group together because we have to make a music video in Video production class. We chose to make a video of the song, "You Give Love a Bad Name". I'm very excited to get started because I just know it's going to turn out awesome!

In communications EDU, I also had the stress of finishing my PSA video. But I at least made some progress on it by recording Curissa's voice for it. I also wrote and finished the script.

Tonight I was so glad because I finished my PowerPoint presentation for Communications Speech class tonight--just in time for class tomorrow!
Day #15 Journal Monday, July 20th, 2015

With my final week at UK Summer Academy, I just began my video production class. So far we didn't do much except learning a little about video editing software and how to use it. There really wasn't much to do, so the class ended about an hour and a half early so we went back to our dorms.

In Communications speech class, I was stressed out because it was just yesterday that I discovered I was working on  my outline wrong the whole time, so I had to start over and ended up being one of the few that were behind on submitting the outline. But later that day most of my stress was gone because I got to finish almost all of my work, including my tea video.

In the art of acting, we given "boring" scripts to change and modify so that it was turned into a story and made interesting.

I sure hope I can manage to successfully complete all of my projects.

Day #14 Journal Sun, July 19th, 2015

Though I'd woken up at 7am yesterday, today I decided to wake up at 9am because I wanted to sleep a little longer. I would've slept even later than that, but my Mom, Aunt Sharon, and my cousin Sarah were coming to visit me and my sister. We'd been expecting them to arrive here around 11:30 but it wasn't until around 12:15 when they were here. A little sad that we now had about an hour less than intended, I was still happy they came here anyway. It was awhile before we picked a restaurant, but we finally decided on going to O' Charley's. There, I ordered so much food that I had plenty leftover that I ate later.

After that, we barely made it back to Woodlen Glenn in time for the Olympic games. I was very nervous at the time because I knew that I was representing my team for the hula-hoop competition and that there was going to be some tension between me and my sister because we're equally matched. But at the end, I ended up with 2nd, while my sister had 3rd.

As for the final results, my team--the Blue Team--was in first place, that is, until the final event, which the Green Team--my sister's team--won because the last event was worth triple points!
I don't really mind though.....as long as I got to personally beat my sister at something! >:)
Day #13 journal Sat, July 18th, 2015

This morning I woke up at 7am, despite being allowed to sleep until 11:30pm and hardly anyone was awake. With that, I just decided to get my laundry done early before everyone wanted to do theirs all at once. Eventually, a few other students woke up, so we decided to go to breakfast. Later, I had so much time on my hands that I borrowed someone's laptop and watched videos. But now I feel so dumb for wasting my time when I could've been using it do work. But at the time I thought I was done with everything.

Later that night, we had a dance party. It was the most fun I'd had in a long time! With my friends, I danced wildly to about every song until the very end of the party, which--to my surprise--had gotten to be extended to 11:30 because everyone was having so much fun. It was amazing!
Day #12 Journal Fri, July 17th, 2015

-TGIF! Since it's Friday, it is my last day of Turkish class. So today we took our final test and I was surprised to know that I remembered more vocab words than I thought I would. During our final day, we also made a Skype call with one of Fahti's--my Turkish instructor---friends, so that we could learn firsthand from another person about Turkey and its culture.
One bad thing that happened was that our tea video had gotten deleted the morning after we finished it due to the wi-fi messing up in our dorm building! So we have to start it over again...

-In World of Music class, we played the drums outside.

-In the Art of Acting, we observed people and saw how they moved and what part of their body they "lead with" to see if we can discern what it means and what kind of person they may be. Then we drew a picture of them, really emphasizing how they lead themselves.

-In EDU speech I am writing a rough draft for my final speech

Day #11 Journal Thurs July 16th, 2015

-In photography class, I took many interesting pictures outside. Perspective pictures, close up pictures of trees, plants, the sky, and even a picture of a dog. I'm troubled in this class by the fact that I really haven't been getting much of anything done. I have three weeks of lectures to watch, but I didn't get to watch any of them because I'd brought no technology and no headphones to at least watch them in the library. I hope I will be able to complete them soon though.

-In EDU class, I was very relieved to find out that I didn't have to write an essay after all, because I hadn't finished mine. But instead I had to make an outline/storyboard for my group's PSA video. Though, I'm not quite sure how it'll turn out because one person already left from camp and can no longer be in the video.
Day #10 Journal Wed, July 15, 2015

-In world of music class today, me and three other students got to drum the hardest part of the song we played.

-In Creativity and the Art of Acting class, we played a game to thoroughly learn and be more aware of the space going on around us.

-In EDU Speech class, I presented my demonstration speech on How to Draw a Cartoon Bunny Rabbit. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I'd be and turned out to present much better than I did before. The only think I still have to be aware of is my speaking too quietly.

-Turkish went well, but earlier I'd been very upset because I'd accidentally broken the teacup I was supposed to use in a video or Turkish class!  But I later found out that it wasn't very valuable and that I could've bought a new one. Also in Turkish we wrote a list of over 30 vocab words in Turkish. I was nervous that we had to remember them all.

Day #9 Journal Tues, July 14, 2015

Today I continued my photography class. It was nice today because unlike the first day where we had to sit down the entire class, we got to get up and move all around to take interesting photos that featured the elements of the visual arts: line, mass/form, color, light, texture, space, value.

In my Communications EDU class, I'm working on writing a PSA that I'll be presenting through video that's probably due Friday. I'm very nervous for it, but also excited because I enjoy writing essays.

In Turkish class, we went over some things we learned yesterday to refresh our memory. We learned more about dances and different music genres. The culture is very interesting. We also learned about the story of the Evil Eye. The Evil Eye is very widely know symbol across the country. It's featured on beads and necklaces. People wear it because they believe that it's supposed to help keep evil spirits away. It is also said that if the eye cracks or breaks while you are wearing it, that means whatever spirit that may have been around you is now gone. I thought it was such an interesting legend.
Day #8 Journal Mon, July 13, 2015

With a new week, I begin my new elective: Turkish. Today in Turkish, I learned different things about the culture, the language, and the country itself. I learned how to say basic greetings, how to have small talk, how to say my age, certain dance moves, etc. With all that I learned, at the end of the week for my final project, I have to learn how to make Turkish tea and how to serve it properly.

Later I again had World Music class, Communications Speech class, and the Art of Acting. In World music I learned how to continue the same beat while others play another beat until it all comes together in sync. In Communications class, I learned how I can improve a speech by talking louder and practicing my timing. I also have an upcoming project that's due Wednesday. In the Art of Acting, we played the "yes" game (a game in which everyone gathers in a circle, someone in the circle points to someone else, that person says "yes" and the person who pointed moves to that new spot). We also played a game that teaches us to be more aware of the space around us.

When our classes ended, it finally began to rain and storm hard outside. Some of the other campers were a bit scared by the storms, but I wasn't; I really enjoy storms. The only thing I was really worried about was getting my hair wet.

Day #7 Journal Sun, July 12, 2015

Today was a great day. I was so glad to have a very generous amount of free time that I got to spend with my friends. I was also happy that during some of that time my parents visited. Though I was kind of sad they couldn't come to my dorm, I was still content with at least being able to see them.

When we began the "Olympic" games, I had such a close call with the hula-hoop challenge. When I began the challenge, I found out that the top time was 12 mins and 4 sec. I also found out that my sister--who is also impressive at hula-hooping-- held the time of 10 mins. and 50 sec. I just knew I had to beat it. At first it was awkward to hula-hoop in front of everyone because I was the only one on my team who still held out. But eventually I broke the record with 12 mins and 40 sec. I was nervous but also thrilled with how much my team cheered me on. It really encouraged me. But I was also nervous because, knowing that there was one last group after mine, I knew someone just may beat me. With disappointment, I later realized that my time was beat by another girl who held the time of 13 mins. So when we do the Olympic games next week, I hope that I may win the ultimate challenge against the other winners.
Day #6 Journal Sat, July 11, 15

For the FUSION community service rejects, I chose St. Agnes House. In this project, my group worked to clean the house by making beds, cleaning the floors, and cleaning the kitchen, living room, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Doing the work was enjoyable and rewarding because it felt good knowing that I was helping with such a great cause. I would like to do something like this again.

I enjoyed how much leisure time we were allowed today since it's the weekend. I spent my time swimming, then later, I rested.

At the end of the day, I got to go to try different foods from around the world and meet someone that is not from here. During that time we spent outside, we all played volleyball.

Day #5 Journal Fri, July 10, 2015

In my communications class I had to make a speech today. I actually wasn't nervous for my speech, but only thing I really needed to improve was how quietly I was speaking and that I could've made a better introduction. This is something I want to keep in mind, so that the next time I have a speech, I will talk louder and refine my introduction.

In my Japanese class, I made a power point presentation about different things in Japan such as recent fashion trends, foods, and music. I did well but I had the same problem about speaking too quietly. I will definitely keep in mind to be much louder next time.

In that same class, I also got to make my own sushi. In a seaweed wrap I put crab, rice, avocados, tuna and salmon. A lot of fish! Later, we then watched a Japanese movie, My Neighbor Totoro. It was very entertaining, cute and funny to watch.

Later today, I got to go to the Legends baseball game. The bad news is that we stayed there for three hours only to find that it was a rainout. But the good news is that we got to see beautiful fireworks light up the sky. While I was there I entertained myself by dancing to the music they played and still had fun.

Day #4 Journal Thurs., July 9, 2015

Today I got to start two more new classes: photography and Communications EDU. So far in my photography class, I haven'g gotten to do anything yet, but we went over some basic words related to photography such as focal point, contrast, zoom, shutter. I also know that eventually I will be learning certain photography techniques that will enhance a photo without us having to use any photo manipulation apps or special effects.

In my communications EDU class, we familiarized ourselves with the "4 Cs" : communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. These "Cs" will help us to work in a group effectively.

Finally, today I also had my Japanese Language and Culture class where I practice calligraphy in Japanese. I turned out to be much better at it than I thought I would.

Day #3 Journal Wed., July 8, 2015

Today I was very happy to get to go to my first classes. My classes included communications, Japanese Culture and Language, World Music, and Art of Acting.

For my Japanese class, I went on a very interesting tour to learn about Toyota--which happens to be a Japanese company--and how they make their cars. While I was there, I learned a few Japanese words. In my communications class, I learned that communication is not only verbal, but it can also be seen in eye-contact and body language. In my World Music class, I learned how to play a complicated, yet fun song to play on a drum. And finally, in my Art of Acting class, we played games to learn about acting techniques. The games were awkward to play at first, but they they quickly became fun and interesting.

Later when classes were over, I got to bond with other campers during game night. I had a blast playing games and learning about other people. I was also glad to have plenty of leisure time to rest and to finish work from classes.

Day #2 Journal Tues, July 7, 2015

So far I'm having a really great time at University of Kentucky's Summer Academy Camp though I've been here for only two days. One thing I like so far about Camp is that since the classes haven't begun yet, it gives me and other campers plenty of time to get to know each other as well as getting to know UK's campus.

Today, our day consisted of touring the campus Recreational Center, learning about majors at UK, and getting plenty of information about the college. My favorite part about today was exploring the Rec. Center because I love fitness.

I am anticipating the exciting things I'll be getting to experience at UK Summer Academy. I can't wait!
